What is a URL?

Image
Since websites are considered resources, and every website the world over has a unique address per a uniform addressing scheme, “Uniform Resource Locator” (formerly Universal Resource Locator) or  URL , is a fancy name for website address. A synonym that is actually more precise but less well-known is URI, or Uniform Resource Identifier. The term “URI” developed after URL had already gained widespread public use; hence URI is used by those involved in Internet development, standards and protocols, while URL is the prevalent term outside those circles. A Web browser is software used to cruise the World Wide Web. Every browser has a URL window where the address of the currently viewed webpage is displayed. Clicking on a hyperlink within a webpage will direct the browser to a new URL or Web address, changing the text inside the URL window. In tabbed browsing the active tab’s address will show in the browser’s URL window. A website address can also be manually typed o...

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Bitmap Images?

Image
Chances are good that you have dealt with a bitmap image. They are the type of images produced by digital cameras and scanners. People also use them when they are editing or enhancing photographs or drawings. These images, though widely used, have various advantages and disadvantages. These include issues with re-sizing a picture, image quality, and file size. One of the advantages to using a bitmap image is that it can display a picture realistically. Bitmap images are made up out of pixels, which is basically a colored dot. Properly positioning the different colored dots next to each other will perform the illusion of one color blending into another. Thus, it is easier to get a more real-looking image using this format. The ease at which people can share and edit pictures is another advantage of these images. Computer programs ranging from oekaki drawing forums to professional image editing software are available for viewing, creating, and editing...

What is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol?

Image
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the networking communication language used on the World Wide Web to exchange text, graphics, sound, and other types of data and services. HTTP transfers data between globally linked computers in plain text. A secure version of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS) instructs Web browsers to encrypt communication streams to protect sensitive information. HTTPS is used for all commerce, banking, and other services where a secure link is required. The invention of HTTP and the World Wide Web is credited to MIT English physicist, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee (“Tim” Berners-Lee). Berners-Lee proposed the idea in March 1989, and in December 1990, he and his team successfully exchanged data between networked computers using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. HTTP operates on the client-server model, where the server is a computer on the Internet hosting a website or data bank, and the client is a computer requesting inform...

What Are the Differences between a Laptop and Desktop Computer?

Image
A laptop and desktop computer differ in both size and functionality. A laptop is much smaller and therefore often more convenient to use. A desktop computer is much larger, and tends to last much longer than a laptop before it needs to be repaired or replaced. A laptop is often a self-contained unit, and no additional parts are needed to run it. Users often have to purchase monitors and other accessories to operate a desktop computer. There is little to no difference in the types of software that can be run on each type of computer. The size is the most noticeable difference between a laptop and desktop computer. A laptop is a single machine with the hard drive, disk drive, monitor, wireless modem, keyboard and mouse contained within it, and it easily folds to be stored in a carrying case. The only additional accessory that is often needed is a power cable with an adapter attached to it. A desktop computer consists of a tower, which is a large rectangular box. The h...

What is MSRP?

Image
MSRP, or Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price, is the selling price that a manufacturer recommends for its products. It is also sometimes referred to as the list price, and is most commonly associated in the car industry. Manufacturer prices are used for marketing by retail businesses and for comparison shopping by consumers. Setting Prices Any product can be given an MSRP, although they are especially common for automobiles, electronics, appliances, and other higher price goods. Because it is set by the manufacturer, it does not change at different stores or locations. The price is meant to reflect the costs involved in manufacturing and selling the product, and in most cases, an average mark-up by retailers is taken into account. Suggested prices are set so that each participant in the selling process — the manufacturer, the wholesaler, and the retailer — can make a profit from the final sale. If the MSRP is set too low, and the retailer feels it cannot make enough mo...

What is Mold?

Image
A mold is a type of fungus: a plant-like organism that does not use photosynthesis to produce food, but instead obtains it directly from its surroundings. Molds can display themselves in a variety of colors, such as the familiar green covering often seen on bread or fruit, but this is due only to the reproductive part of the organism — the fungal equivalent of flowers and fruit. The main part of the fungus consists of a network of thin, transparent filaments known as  hyphae , which is much less visible. These fungi can grow on a variety of materials, including soil, decaying plant parts, food, fabrics, and damp walls. They reproduce by releasing huge numbers of tinyspores, which are very tough, and can withstand drying and freezing. Although mold can be a nuisance, and occasionally a health hazard, they can also be useful; they are essential for the breakdown of dead organic matter in the natural environment, they are a valuable source of antibiotics...

What is the Difference Between a Serial and Parallel Port?

Image
Both serial ports and parallel ports are examples of computer technology that were once cutting edge; for most of the history of personal computers, both the serial and  parallel port  were the most common means of data transfer and communication. With technological advances, both the serial and parallel port have largely been replaced by the use of USB ports, and fewer new devices are designed to include either a serial or parallel port. Older personal computers that feature a serial and parallel port often require an adapter cable in order to make use of the latest generation of peripheral devices. Perhaps the main difference between a serial and parallel port is the way information is communicated: a parallel port is only able to transfer information from the  hard drive , while a  serial port  can transfer information both to and from a hard drive. Parallel Ports Of the two, the parallel port is the older port design with the first use in the early...

What is the Difference Between DSL and ADSL?

Image
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a generic term categorizing services provided over copper wire. DSL subscribers may receive high speed Internet service and other services bundled with the DSL package. When a service provider or ISP offers Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), the customer will receive service that is not guaranteed to be the same speed in both directions. For example, many ISPs advertise their Internet service with a download and an upload speed, 1Mbps download and 256Kbps upload (or something similar). These advertised speeds are rarely the same in both directions. This would be the way that ADSL works, the upload and download speeds offered by the ISP to subscribers is different and stated that way. DSL is more generic, implying any type of Digital Subscriber Line service, from ADSL where the upload and download speeds are different, to symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL) in which the upload and download speeds are the ...

What is a Computer?

Image
We are all familiar with what a computer is in a specific, contemporary sense. Personal computers (PCs) are found in most aspects of daily life, and for some it is hard to even imagine a world without them. But the term means more than simply the Macs and PCs we are familiar with. A computer is, at its most basic, a machine which can take instructions, and perform computations based on those instructions. It is the ability to take instructions — often known as programs — and execute them, that distinguishes a computer from a mechanical calculator. While both are able to make computations, a calculator responds simply to immediate input. In fact, most modern calculators are actually computers, with a number of pre-installed programs to help aid in complex tasks. Computers range from the very small to the very large. Some are capable of doing millions of calculations in a single second, while others may take long periods of time to do even the most simple calculations. But theo...
