What is a URL?

Image
Since websites are considered resources, and every website the world over has a unique address per a uniform addressing scheme, “Uniform Resource Locator” (formerly Universal Resource Locator) or  URL , is a fancy name for website address. A synonym that is actually more precise but less well-known is URI, or Uniform Resource Identifier. The term “URI” developed after URL had already gained widespread public use; hence URI is used by those involved in Internet development, standards and protocols, while URL is the prevalent term outside those circles. A Web browser is software used to cruise the World Wide Web. Every browser has a URL window where the address of the currently viewed webpage is displayed. Clicking on a hyperlink within a webpage will direct the browser to a new URL or Web address, changing the text inside the URL window. In tabbed browsing the active tab’s address will show in the browser’s URL window. A website address can also be manually typed or pasted into

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Bitmap Images?

Image
Chances are good that you have dealt with a bitmap image. They are the type of images produced by digital cameras and scanners. People also use them when they are editing or enhancing photographs or drawings. These images, though widely used, have various advantages and disadvantages. These include issues with re-sizing a picture, image quality, and file size. One of the advantages to using a bitmap image is that it can display a picture realistically. Bitmap images are made up out of pixels, which is basically a colored dot. Properly positioning the different colored dots next to each other will perform the illusion of one color blending into another. Thus, it is easier to get a more real-looking image using this format. The ease at which people can share and edit pictures is another advantage of these images. Computer programs ranging from oekaki drawing forums to professional image editing software are available for viewing, creating, and editing these pictures. With all the

What is the Hypertext Transfer Protocol?

Image
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the networking communication language used on the World Wide Web to exchange text, graphics, sound, and other types of data and services. HTTP transfers data between globally linked computers in plain text. A secure version of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS) instructs Web browsers to encrypt communication streams to protect sensitive information. HTTPS is used for all commerce, banking, and other services where a secure link is required. The invention of HTTP and the World Wide Web is credited to MIT English physicist, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee (“Tim” Berners-Lee). Berners-Lee proposed the idea in March 1989, and in December 1990, he and his team successfully exchanged data between networked computers using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. HTTP operates on the client-server model, where the server is a computer on the Internet hosting a website or data bank, and the client is a computer requesting information from the server. H

What Are the Differences between a Laptop and Desktop Computer?

Image
A laptop and desktop computer differ in both size and functionality. A laptop is much smaller and therefore often more convenient to use. A desktop computer is much larger, and tends to last much longer than a laptop before it needs to be repaired or replaced. A laptop is often a self-contained unit, and no additional parts are needed to run it. Users often have to purchase monitors and other accessories to operate a desktop computer. There is little to no difference in the types of software that can be run on each type of computer. The size is the most noticeable difference between a laptop and desktop computer. A laptop is a single machine with the hard drive, disk drive, monitor, wireless modem, keyboard and mouse contained within it, and it easily folds to be stored in a carrying case. The only additional accessory that is often needed is a power cable with an adapter attached to it. A desktop computer consists of a tower, which is a large rectangular box. The hardware for th
